This Is Why You’re Not Losing Weight On The Carnivore Diet: A Guide for Women Over 45

The carnivore diet, which emphasizes consumption of animal products while eliminating all plant-based foods, has garnered significant attention for its potential weight loss and health benefits. For many, this diet seems like an easy fix for shedding pounds. However, some women over 45 find themselves frustrated when the results don’t align with their expectations. If you’re struggling to lose weight on the carnivore diet, understanding the unique challenges faced by women in this age group can provide insight into your experience.

Understanding the Carnivore Diet

The carnivore diet consists primarily of meat, fish, and animal-derived products. Proponents argue that it helps reduce inflammation, improve mental clarity, and provide a straightforward approach to weight loss. While many people report success with this diet, it’s essential to recognize that individual responses may vary significantly, especially for women experiencing hormonal changes due to aging.

Why Weight Loss May Stall

  1. Hormonal Changes
As women age, especially around menopause, hormonal fluctuations can affect metabolism and fat distribution. A drop in estrogen levels can lead to an increase in body fat and a decrease in muscle mass. These changes can complicate weight loss efforts, making it necessary to adjust diet and lifestyle to accommodate these shifts.

  2. Insulin Resistance
Postmenopausal women are more prone to insulin resistance, which can hinder weight loss. While the carnivore diet may help stabilize blood sugar levels for some, others might not see the same benefits. Monitoring carbohydrate intake and ensuring adequate protein and fat consumption can help mitigate insulin spikes and promote fat burning.

  3. Caloric Intake and Portion Sizes
One common misconception about the carnivore diet is the idea that one can eat unlimited quantities of meat without considering caloric intake. While animal products can be satiating, it’s still essential to keep an eye on portion sizes. Overeating calorie-dense foods, even those approved on the carnivore diet, can lead to weight maintenance or gain rather than loss.

  4. Nutrient Deficiencies
Although the carnivore diet provides high levels of certain nutrients (like protein and vitamin B12), it lacks others (like fiber, vitamin C, and certain antioxidants) that are essential for overall health. Deficiencies can affect energy levels, metabolism, and even cravings, potentially leading to plateaus in weight loss.

  5. Inadequate Hydration and Electrolyte Balance
Many individuals on the carnivore diet may not realize the importance of hydration and maintaining electrolyte balance, especially with the absence of fruits and vegetables that are typically consumed. Dehydration or low electrolyte levels can lead to fatigue and disrupt metabolic processes, hindering weight loss.

  6. Lack of Variety and Satisfaction
The strict nature of the carnivore diet may lead some to feel restricted or bored with their meals. A lack of satisfaction can contribute to binge eating or breaking the diet, which can derail weight loss efforts. It’s crucial to find ways to enjoy the foods allowed on the diet and to experiment with different cooking methods to maintain interest.

  7. Stress and Sleep
Hormonal balance and metabolism are greatly influenced by stress and sleep quality. Women over 45 often juggle multiple responsibilities, leading to increased stress levels that can exacerbate weight gain or hinder weight loss. Additionally, poor sleep can disrupt hunger hormones like ghrelin and leptin, leading to increased cravings and overeating.

Tips for Success on the Carnivore Diet

  1. Monitor Portion Sizes
Be mindful of how much you’re eating, and consider tracking your intake.

  2. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water and consider incorporating electrolytes to support your body’s needs.

  3. Focus on Nutrient Variety
Explore different types of meat, organ meats, and fish to ensure you obtain a wide range of nutrients.

  4. Manage Stress
Incorporate stress-reducing practices like yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises into your routine.

  5. Prioritize Sleep
Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night, as this is essential for hormonal balance and weight management.

  6. Be Patient
Acknowledge that weight loss may occur at a slower pace than it did in younger years. It’s crucial to focus on overall health and wellness rather than just the numbers on the scale.

Final Thoughts

The carnivore diet may offer benefits for many, but it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. For women over 45 experiencing challenges with weight loss on this diet, understanding the specific factors at play can be the key to overcoming obstacles. Remember that weight loss is a journey, and it’s important to prioritize health, well-being, and sustainable practices over quick fixes. Consulting with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian can also provide personalized insights and recommendations tailored to your needs.

  8. Kelly Hogan has an excellent recipe for air fryer steak that turns out great! Pat steak dry and salt. Set air fryer to 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Preheat for five minutes so air fryer is good and hot. Put steak in fryer when there are 10 minutes left in the cook cycle, turn steak at 5 minutes when your air fryer prompts you. So easy! Sometimes I add a minute for thicker steaks. Also works for the small packages of lamb chops you get at Sam’s club.

  9. Lisa, thanks so much! Menopausal woman here who would like to lose 20 more pounds but am stuck as fas as I know. Haven’t weighed myself lately. The sound level was loud enough for me to hear on my iPad while I was in the shower, which I appreciate. New subscriber!

  20. Hey Lisa,
Just starting watching your videos, can I drink coffee with cream on the carnivore diet?

  21. One of my co-workers brought a cake today, with guava filling. I love guava but I had no problem passing by that plate! I knew I was coming home to air fryer shrimp (dipped in crushed pork rinds) and braised boneless beef short ribs. I have been a meat lover all my life, but was raised in a blue collar family with a mother who wouldn't get a job outside the home but hated to cook, so most of what we ate was carbs of some sort, a lot of pasta and a lot of sandwiches on Roman meal bread which is basically Wonder bread dyed brown, with a little bit of meat because that's what we could afford. Now, as an adult, if I find meat on sale, I stock up my freezer. I have eggs and a little bit of cheese in my fridge, and I have never been so happy with my meals. I'm not new to carnivore, but I'm getting into it again because I need to lose the weight due to borderline hypertension and arthritis. With all of these amazing videos on YouTube, I'm finding ways to keep it from being boring.

  22. You look amazing & beautiful! You’re glowing!
I’m actually trying to gain a bit of weight myself on carnivore.

  23. I lost weight very slowly on 2 years keto and not at all on 3 months carnivore. So I designed my own diet after combing through several books on metabolic dysfunction which I had concluded must be the problem. (Good Energy, 10-Day Detox Diet, AIP diet.) I thought, since I have Hashimoto's, the dreaded inflamation might be part of my problem. My blood work didn't really support that I had metabolic dysfunction although some of my readings were higher than optimal but within the ranges, and my inflamation was low. One of the functional doctors on YT suggested that really low carb diets are not good for Hashimoto's. He suggested 100 g. a day. Since neither keto or carnivore were working for me, I took the suggestions for metabolically healthy diet and made up my own, also using a list of my own food sensitivities. I also jettisoned high lectin and high oxalate toxic vegetables just in case. I set a more or less limit of carbs at 50 to start. One of the things the metabolism books said not to do is calorie restrict into a level of starvation (1000 cal or lower) which invariably causes yo yo dieting. So here's what I've done….Got rid of anything I thought I might be sensitive to, keep my calories between 1500 and 1800, (I'm 5'3") EAT ONLY WHOLE FOOD, something the metabolic books said was critical. The only processed thing I eat is 2 slices of Ezekiel flourless sprouted bread for breakfast, something I really missed. There's 22 net carbs in that. I'm counting my macros, but don't skimp on low carb vege. Most important, I believe, is that I only eat 1 T. added fat, butter on my toast. I'm concluding that my lack of success on keto and carn. was due to the excess fat both insist on. I eat the fat that's on meat and poultry skin, but found out processed meat is bad for a number of reasons, so I don't eat bacon, sausage, etc. I use my air fryer for all meats. (400 degrees puts a brown coat on meats and leaves them juicy inside.) I eat starchy foods to complete my 50 g. carbs. after my toast. I am now losing 3 lbs a week, after the initial water loss which was about 5 lbs. So, don't get too involved in doing the keto or carnivore thing. There's so much contradictory in these videos across YT. I was told on these videos to increase fat if I didn't lose weight which is ridiculous. A whole stick of butter??? Didn't work. I believe the higher carbs improves my energy and I may even see what happens if I go to 100. Be experimental….Be your own person!

  24. I eat fat/ butter I can’t tolerate it I get sick I feel like I’m going faint I have to go lay down immediately I’m sleepy no energy and I never feel hungry I’m still fasting. I can feel it in my head as soon as I eat at this point I think I’m allergic to food, 😂😂😂I’m miserable, I started out on a no carb no sugar lost 30 lb in a month trying to move over to carnivore gained 4 lb back in 1 day haven’t lost any more weight but I haven’t gained! What am I doing wrong????

  25. Have not been able to lose the last 10-15 lbs Lisa, doing a GF 1 stick of butter in the AM then only dinner. Mostly Carvivore, no carbs. Still just stuck but I don't know why
