How I Lost 70 lbs: My Plant-Based Weight Loss Journey
Embarking on a weight loss journey can be both exciting and daunting. For many, the goal is not just about shedding pounds but also establishing a healthier lifestyle. In my case, the journey involved losing 70 pounds through a plant-based diet, emphasizing the principles of the Starch Solution. Here’s a glimpse into my story, how long it took, and the lessons learned along the way.
The Beginning: Why Plant-Based?
When I began my weight loss journey, I felt tired, lethargic, and unmotivated. One day, I decided enough was enough. After researching various diets, I stumbled upon the concept of a plant-based diet, heavily influenced by the Starch Solution principles, which advocate for a low-fat, starch-centric way of eating. This diet focuses on whole foods like grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables, providing the necessary nutrients without excess calories.
I was intrigued by the idea of eating until satiety rather than counting calories. It resonated deeply with me because one of my struggles had always been the feeling of deprivation on traditional diets.
How Long It Took to Lose 70 lbs
The journey to losing 70 pounds took me approximately 10 months. It wasn’t a straightforward path, as I faced numerous challenges and learning experiences along the way, but here’s how I progressed over that period:
The First Few Weeks: Adjusting to Change
The first couple of weeks were a whirlwind of meal planning and adjustment. I started focusing on simple meals that revolved around starches—think brown rice, sweet potatoes, and hearty legumes. Initially, it was a big shift from my regular diet, and cravings for processed foods were at an all-time high. However, I found solace in fruit-based desserts and whole grain snacks.
The First Month: The Scale Drops
At the one-month mark, I had lost about 15 pounds. This early success motivated me immensely. I learned to experiment with recipes and was amazed at how satisfying wholesome, plant-based food could be. Each meal was nutrient-dense, helping me to feel full without the excess calories.
As Time Progressed: Hitting Plateaus
Around the 4-5 month mark, I encountered plateaus. The weight wasn’t coming off as easily as before, and I found myself feeling frustrated. It was a pivotal moment for me, as I had to remind myself of my goals and why I started. I began incorporating more physical activity into my routine, including walking, jogging, and bodyweight exercises, all while keeping my meals in line with my starch-centered approach.
Continuing the Journey: Consistency Over Perfection
Throughout months six to nine, I learned that consistency was key. I began meal prepping every Sunday, ensuring that my week was filled with delicious, nutritious meals. I discovered that whole foods are incredibly versatile, and I found joy in trying new recipes, fueling my body with the goodness it craved.
The Transformation: Reaching My Goal
At about 10 months, I finally reached my goal of losing 70 pounds. It was a moment of immense satisfaction, not just for the number on the scale but for the transformation I felt in my life. I had more energy, improved mental clarity, and a greater appreciation for food and how it impacts my body.
Lessons Learned Along the Way
- Simplicity is Key: Embracing simple, whole foods made meal prep easier and more enjoyable.
- Listen to Your Body: Understanding hunger cues and allowing flexibility in your diet helped me stay mindful and avoid binge-eating.
- Stay Active: Incorporating regular exercise boosted my weight loss and enhanced my overall mood.
- Community Matters: Finding online communities and joining plant-based groups offered support and inspiration to stay on track.
Conclusion: A Lifestyle Change
Looking back, losing 70 pounds was not merely about the number on the scale; it was about adopting a healthier lifestyle. This journey taught me the importance of nourishing my body with wholesome foods and finding joy in the process. A plant-based diet doesn’t just support weight loss; it fosters a vibrant, energizing way of living.
If you’re considering starting a weight loss journey, I encourage you to explore the possibilities of a plant-based lifestyle centered around whole, nutrient-dense foods. Your body—like mine—might just thank you for it!

Our ancestors from the beginning of time survived and thrived on meat. They didn't survive on a salad. Make it make sense. Furthermore, starch like grains, rice, pasta, crackers, cereal, bread, were never meant to be consumed by humans. Also, you need healthy fats in your diet for proper brain function and proper nutrition. Like Olive oil, avocados, avocado oil, eggs, meat, fish, coconut oil, butter, dairy.
So you ate bread pasta and white rice??? What??? That's awesome!!!!
I’m down 40 pounds and it took me a year! Now I am going back to strictly plant based (before I would eat fish on occasion). I noticed a big difference in my mental health and my nails and hair have been growing back like crazy!

Wow!! You are truely beautiful now and also before lose your weight!!
You should now start using oils to avoid alzheimars or dementia…. Use only Avocado, Coconut and Olive oil. When you can, drink it at night (1tspn)

36 months 70% diet & 30% weightlifting 🏋️♀️ & mostly bike 🚲 + elliptical machine No loose skin & no (none) weight gain relapse. 😊 305 to 235 (6’ 1” tall – male & 63 years young) resting heart rate 50 this morning.
You forgot to mention exercise.
Your brain, hormones, Mylan sheath, gallbladder all need fat. Ex plantbased here getting tested for MS. Ate low fat my whole life and struggled with brain fog because the brain needs fat. Knee oroblems because the body need collagen & gelatin from fat. Im now on the carnivore diet and discovered most people on it are ex vegan. Your thyroid issue is due to your vegan diet.
Lizzo is vegan too, and body builders who have a way better body eat chicken fish and beef 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Way to go, Queen!! 🎉

Also, to help with hamstring flexibility work the fascia on your feet. Try before and after and see how much more mobility and flexibility you have.

Thank you for sharing. I really needed this to help jump start my journey
Plant based has basically become Vegan. Whatever though. I do think it’s best for people to include plenty of lean ruminant animals in their diet along with fruits and vegetables and secondary fillers
